Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Queen Latifah's performance in television and music has earned her the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah, the daughter of the Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was born and raised within Newark New Jersey. Her parents divorced in the year Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic schools in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage when she turned eight. The word means extremely sensitive in Arabic. Latifah is a tall girl of 5'10 inches who played in the basketball team of her high school squad. She sang the song home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah started to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the members of the original form of Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah during that time, was impressed by her song. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
